The Mosaic
Tóm tắt
Dark fantasy with progression elements. The tone is atmospheric and morally gray — oppressive institutional power contrasted with desperate underground resistance. Moments of quiet intimacy (a stolen childhood memory surfacing during a fight, a dead mother's lullaby hummed without understanding why) punctuate tension, conspiracy, and visceral memory-combat. The world feels lived-in and decayed: gilded halls built on mass graves, elegant citizens whose smiles are borrowed from the dead. Horror cr

Vaelith Sorn
antagonistA high-ranking Remembrancer — one of the twelve who govern Vael's Crossing from the Hall of Accumulated Lives. Vaelith is over three hundred years old, sustained by an enormous reservoir of harvested Recall that gives him centuries of accumulated skills, knowledge, and emotional experience. He is elegant, soft-spoken, and utterly convinced that the Remembrancers' rule is the natural order. He views Mosaics as abominations — not because they are dangerous, but because they are crude: unliftable weights sewn into a single vessel. Vaelith is secretly a member of the inner circle working to resurrect Vael Cronus, believing that an ascended Remembrancer would bring permanent stability to the world. His personal stake: he was alive when Vael Cronus was first destroyed, and he helped do it — but he has come to regret that choice.
Kael Ashford
protagonistA young man who wakes in a mass grave outside the city of Vael's Crossing with no memories of his own — only hundreds of fractured memory-fragments from dozens of murdered individuals bleeding through his mind. He is a Mosaic: an illegal composite of harvested Recall stitched into one body. He does not know who made him, why, or who he was before. The fragments include a soldier's combat instincts, a scholar's forbidden research, a mother's fierce protectiveness, a thief's cunning, and dozens more — each a clue to a murder, each a piece of a conspiracy that stretches back centuries. As the story progresses, Kael must decide what identity means when you are built from pieces of other people, and whether the person he constructs from those pieces is real enough to fight for.
Seraphine Voss
supporting character / handler-allyA senior operative of the Dissolution underground — a resistance network fighting to overthrow the Remembrancers' memory-hoarding regime. Seraphine is pragmatic, controlled, and morally flexible in service of what she considers a righteous cause. She found Kael in the mass grave and immediately recognized what he was: a weapon. Her initial relationship with Kael is transactional — she protects him because a Mosaic is invaluable to the Dissolution's cause. But as she witnesses Kael's struggle to hold onto his identity against the flood of dead lives, her utilitarian calculus begins to crack. She has her own scars: her younger sister was memory-harvested years ago, and one of the fragments inside Kael might be hers.
Lira Fontaine
supporting character / love interestA licensed memory-worker — one of the rare professionals who helps people manage their Recall safely, treating memory-bleed, echo residue, and the psychological effects of selling personal memories. Lira operates a small clinic in the lower city, serving clients too poor for the Remembrancers' elite services. She is warm, perceptive, and stubbornly ethical in a world that incentivizes exploitation. When Kael is brought to her by Seraphine to manage his escalating personality bleed, Lira is the first person who treats him as a patient rather than an asset or a threat. She helps Kael develop the mental architecture to navigate his own mind without drowning in the fragments.
Hadeon
supporting character / memory-fragmentHadeon was a career soldier in the Vael's Crossing militia who discovered — and was murdered for discovering — evidence that the Remembrancers were selectively harvesting soldiers' combat memories to build an army of Recall-enhanced enforcers. His memory-fragment is the most dominant in Kael's mind because Hadeon died fighting: his last act was a desperate attempt to get the evidence to someone who could use it. Within Kael, Hadeon manifests as a voice of tactical clarity and grim determination. He is the fragment most likely to surface during combat, and the one most resistant to Kael's attempts to control the bleed. He does not want to be a passenger — he wants to finish his mission.
Maren Delworth
supporting character / memory-fragmentMaren was a memory-researcher at the Athenaeum — Vael's Crossing's premier institution for studying Recall — who discovered that Vael Cronus was not fully destroyed but had left fragments of his consciousness embedded in the memory-network itself. She was harvesting-buried for this discovery, and her research notes were confiscated. Her memory-fragment within Kael carries not just her knowledge but her methodology: an analytical, pattern-recognition mindset that surfaces when Kael needs to investigate, deduce, or navigate complex information. She is the fragment who helps Kael see the conspiracy not as a series of isolated murders but as an interconnected design.
Wren
supporting character / memory-fragmentWren was a teenage pickpocket and lockpick who was harvested for her extraordinary spatial awareness and dexterity — skills the Remembrancers wanted to implant in their Seekers. She was fifteen when she died. Her fragment is the lightest in Kael's mind: quick, irreverent, and surprisingly cheerful for a dead girl. She surfaces during infiltration and stealth situations, and her personality bleed is the least dangerous because she was young enough that her identity had not fully solidified. Wren's fragment also carries a crucial piece of the puzzle: she saw the face of the person who ordered her harvesting, and that face belongs to someone Kael trusts.
Orenthal Dace
supporting character / mystery figureThe person who created Kael — who harvested dozens of memory-fragments from murdered individuals and stitched them into a single body in a hidden laboratory beneath the ruins of the old Athenaeum. Orenthal was once Maren Delworth's research partner and the Athenaeum's foremost expert on memory-implantation. After Maren's harvesting, he disappeared underground, consumed by guilt and driven by a desperate hypothesis: that Vael Cronus's resurrection could be prevented by creating a Mosaic — a person with so many overlapping memories that no single consciousness, not even an ancient Remembrancer's, could dominate. Kael is his proof of concept, his weapon, and his greatest sin. Orenthal has been watching Kael from the shadows since the beginning, adjusting conditions, ensuring he encounters the right people and memories at the right time. He is neither hero nor villain — he is a man who committed atrocities believing the alternative was worse.
