Chapter 9: Stress Test

The countdown read T-00:47:12 when Chen Gang called everyone to the third floor.

Fifteen faces stared at him from the hallway. Some he'd met last night — Zhang Wei, Li Hua, Lin Mei. Others were the scattered residents of Building 7 who'd survived their first day through luck and barricades. Liu Peng stood near the window, testing the weight of his rebar. Wang Shu watched from the corner with her car-door shield across her knees.

"Stress test event in forty-seven minutes," Chen Gang said. "Zhang Wei, give them what you've got."

Zhang Wei stepped forward. He'd spent the last sixteen hours sleeping in forty-minute intervals, running Code Sight over every spawn within six blocks, and cross-referencing the event data with the Developer's Note metadata. His eyes burned. He didn't care.

"Seven waves," he said. "Escalating difficulty. The System will spawn monsters in concentrated bursts — probably from the intersection and the parking structure. The event parameters show difficulty scaling on three variables: our average level, kill speed, and..." He paused.

"And what?" a college student asked.

"How well we cooperate."

Chen Gang filled the silence. "Defense plan. Zhang Wei takes the rooftop — eyes on everything, calling out what he sees. Li Hua and Liu Peng hold the second-floor choke point. Wang Shu and the non-combatants on the fourth floor with anything heavy enough to throw. Lin Mei, third floor behind the barricade. Heal whoever comes back up." He looked at each person as he assigned them. "I'll rotate between floors depending on where pressure builds."

"Where's Fang Lei?" Li Hua asked.

As if summoned, his voice drifted up from the stairwell. "Outside."

Fang Lei appeared on the landing, already geared up. Level 6, three System items humming against his skin, serrated weapon across his back. He'd spent the night farming the parking structure. His kill counter now read 47.

"You're welcome to join the group defense," Chen Gang said.

"I work better alone."

"You work better for yourself. There's a difference."

Fang Lei smiled. Not the kind that invited argument. "Every monster I kill out there is one less hitting your walls. You should be thanking me."

He descended the stairs before Chen Gang could respond.

Zhang Wei watched him go through Code Sight. Fang Lei's build was glass cannon — massive damage, no defense scaling. In a coordinated fight, he'd be the spear. Alone, he was a variable the System hadn't been asked to account for.

The countdown hit zero.

The announcement arrived in two layers. The first was visible to everyone — a full-width blue banner stretching across the sky, readable from every window in Building 7.

STRESS TEST EVENT — SECTOR 7N Waves: 7 | Escalating difficulty Survive all waves for individual rewards Group bonus available for coordinated defense Duration: Until completion or population threshold Begin.

The second layer was only visible to Zhang Wei.

[EVENT_PARAMETERS] Difficulty scaling: average_level(0.8) + kill_efficiency(1.2) + coordination_index(0.5) [EVALUATION_MODE] Active — measuring cooperation, leadership, resource management [HIDDEN_FIELD] Post-event report: [INTERNAL — DO NOT DISPLAY]

Internal. Do not display. The System was running an evaluation module behind the event interface — grading them on three axes while showing everyone a simple survival challenge.

"Here we go," Zhang Wei said.

The ground shook. The intersection lit up with a shimmering spawn point, and the first wave poured out.

Eight Blight Crawlers, Level 2-3. The same species from Zhang Wei's first night — low HP, swarm tactics. Easy.

Li Hua met them in the second-floor hallway with her machete. She'd improved since the dungeon. Three strikes to kill instead of five. She held the choke point without moving, blade catching the light on each swing. Liu Peng flanked from the left, driving rebar into exposed joints while the crawlers focused on Li Hua's blade.

On the rooftop, Zhang Wei watched through Code Sight and called down what he saw. "Two more coming from the parking structure. Left side."

Chen Gang adjusted the rooftop angle and hurled a cinderblock. It crushed one crawler mid-leap.

The wave ended in ninety seconds.

Wave 1/7 Complete | Efficiency: A | Coordination: 0.73

Above threshold.

Wave Two brought twelve. Level 3-4, faster variants mixed in.

One crawler slipped past Liu Peng and clawed up the stairwell toward the third floor. Lin Mei's healing pulse hit Liu Peng before the wound finished forming — she'd been watching his position through the stairwell railing, channeling her resonance through the metal like a conduit. The crawler died against Li Hua's follow-up strike.

Wave 2/7 Complete | Efficiency: A | Coordination: 0.76

Better.

Wave Three changed the pattern.

Sixteen creatures. Three were new — Code Sight flagged them before they fully materialized.

"Shriekers!" Zhang Wei shouted. "Level 5. Twelve-meter fear pulse. Keep your distance or you freeze."

Chen Gang shifted formation without asking questions. "Liu Peng, pull back. Li Hua, hold point, stay spread."

The fight stretched. The Shriekers' fear pulse caught Wang Shu on the fourth floor. She screamed. A water jug shattered on the stairwell below her. Two non-combatants panicked, scrambling away from the window ledge. Chen Gang barked an order from the rooftop and someone grabbed them by the collars.

Outside, Fang Lei carved through three Crawlers with a spinning attack. Luminous afterimages. His kill counter ticked up. He hadn't moved toward the building once.

Wave 3/7 Complete | Efficiency: A- | Coordination: 0.68

The coordination index dropped. One of their fighters wasn't coordinating.

Wave Four hit hard. Twenty-two creatures. Level 5-6. Shriekers in pairs.

Zhang Wei saw it happen in the code — two seconds before the wave spawned, the difficulty scaling algorithm flickered. Their kill efficiency from the first three waves was feeding the multiplier. The System was recalculating.

"It's adapting!" he yelled. "The hallway choke just became a kill box. Get off it now!"

Chen Gang reacted instantly. "Stairwell! Staggered defense, two floors!"

They scrambled. Li Hua grabbed Liu Peng's collar and hauled him backward. Thirty seconds later, the hallway they'd been holding flooded with creatures. If they'd stayed, they'd have been buried.

The new formation held. Two choke points instead of one. Slower kills. But they held.

Wave 4/7 Complete | Efficiency: B+ | Coordination: 0.81

Coordination climbed. Because they'd adapted together.

Zhang Wei's hands trembled. Not from fear — from what he'd watched the System do. It had read their defensive pattern, identified the bottleneck, and spiked difficulty on that exact point. Not scripted. Not pre-programmed. Learned.

The System was learning from them.

Waves Five and Six blurred together. Thirty creatures, then thirty-six. Levels 6 through 8.

Chen Gang took a claw wound across his forearm. Lin Mei healed it from two floors down, channeling through the stairwell's metal railing. Her range was short. The workaround was brilliant. Wang Shu had stopped screaming. She threw water jugs at anything that reached the stairwell with mechanical precision, her expression blank and her arms steady.

Fang Lei cleared the entire south block alone. He hit Level 7 during Wave Five, Level 8 during Six. His personal kill count passed fifty.

Chen Gang was still Level 5. He'd held two floors, organized twelve fighters, and adapted the defense plan three times. He hadn't gained a single level.

The coordination index held at 0.79. Adequate. Not exceptional.

Wave Seven.

Forty-two creatures. Level 8 through 10. Leading them: a Shrieker Commander, Level 10, 4,800 HP, with a Rallying Cry that buffed everything within earshot by thirty percent.

Code Sight showed the boss's adaptive flag. Same as the difficulty algorithm. It would learn their tactics and change.

"Boss adapts!" Zhang Wei called. "Switch tactics every thirty seconds. Don't let it pattern-match."

Chen Gang was bleeding through his bandage. He ignored it. "Full defensive. Every floor. Every person who can stand. If you can throw, throw. If you can block, block."

The building became a war zone. Li Hua and Liu Peng held the second floor against a tide of Crawlers that didn't seem to end. Chen Gang fought on the rooftop with his fire axe, splitting Shrieker skulls while blood ran down his forearm to his elbow. Lin Mei burned through her mana reserves healing three people in sequence. Her Healing Resonance spiked — the stairwell railing glowed under her palms like a heating element.

And Fang Lei charged the Commander head-on.

He cut through the Rallying Cry debuff with raw stats. His weapon carved luminous arcs across the boss's HP bar. 4,800 became 3,200. 3,200 became 1,400. The Commander adapted its attack pattern twice. Fang Lei didn't care. He hit harder.

1,400 became zero.

The remaining creatures scattered. The spawn point died.

STRESS TEST EVENT — COMPLETE Waves Survived: 7/7 Total Kill Count: 156 Solo Operative Kill Count: 53 Group Bonus: DENIED — coordination threshold not met for final wave

Fang Lei's fifty-three kills counted as solo contribution. The group bonus — whatever it was — denied because the coordination index for Wave Seven fell below threshold.

One person's choice had cost everyone.

Fang Lei appeared at the building entrance, drenched in luminescent fluid, Level 8. He looked at the wounded — Liu Peng clutching a broken arm, Lin Mei slumped against the wall with empty mana, Chen Gang's forearm wrapped in soaked cloth — and walked upstairs without speaking.

An hour later, the wounded were tended and the dead were counted. Two of the non-combatants had fallen during Wave Five's fear cascade. Lin Mei had tried to reach them. She couldn't.

Zhang Wei sat in apartment 3B with Code Sight active. The event data lingered beneath the surface, layered like geological strata. He dug past the kill counts and efficiency ratings, past the coordination index, into the metadata layer.

He found it in a subdirectory tagged with two lines of red text.

[INTERNAL — DO NOT DISPLAY] EVALUATION_MODULE: SUBJECT SPECIES 7 — Stress Test Results Sector: 7N | Population: 1,423 (pre-event) | Survivors: 1,389 Casualty Rate: 2.4% Grade: C- Combat Capability: B+ Resource Management: B Cooperation Index: D+ Notes: Individual optimization at expense of group performance detected in primary defense node. Leadership functional but fragile. Recommend increased pressure on cooperation-dependent scenarios.

Zhang Wei closed the screen. Opened it again. Read the cooperation index one more time.

D plus.

Their first formal evaluation, and they'd scraped by with a C minus. Combat capability was decent. Resource management acceptable. But cooperation — the one metric that should have been easiest, the one thing that separated humans from every other species on the planet — D plus.

The combat score had saved them. The cooperation score would kill them eventually.

And the note about "individual optimization at expense of group performance" — the System had clocked Fang Lei in a single event. Flagged him as a variable. Probably added him to a file somewhere, the way a developer flags an exploit before the next patch.

Zhang Wei looked at the Developer's Note on the counter. Subject Species 7. Containment Protocol. Graduated evaluation.

They hadn't been tested on whether they could survive. The System could have killed them all with harder waves if that was the point. They'd been tested on how they survived. Whether they functioned as a unit or just a collection of individuals occupying the same building.

C minus. D plus in cooperation. On a seven-wave test with a population of 1,423.

He thought about what Lin Mei had asked two days ago. What's the pass criteria?

The evaluation module didn't say. But it did note: Recommend increased pressure on cooperation-dependent scenarios.

The next test would be harder. Not because the monsters would be stronger. Because the System was going to make cooperation harder to avoid.
