Scene 1: Shape
Leo hung motionless at 370 meters, breathing through gill-slits that ached with the pressure, and watched the source resolve beneath him.
It was not one object. It was a cluster — angular plates of dark material arranged in concentric rings, each ring spinning at a different rate. The innermost ring turned slowly, its rotation almost imperceptible. The outer rings spun faster, their edges blurring into the water. Between the rings, threads of light poured inward from every direction — the luminous rivers converging from the fissure above, threading through channels carved into the chamber walls, all feeding the same center.
The chamber was enormous. Leo's weave-perception couldn't find the far wall. The ceiling was the fissure itself — a ragged wound in basalt, the edges glowing with coral-script. The floor was smooth, carved from bedrock, covered in channels that looked like circuit traces on a scale measured in meters.
The signal was no longer a pattern. It was constant. A sustained tone that resonated in his sternum, his teeth, the fluid behind his eyes. The gill-slits pulsed in time with it, each pulse sending a tremor through his chest.
DEPTH: 370m PRESSURE: 37 ATM ENERGY RESERVES: 46% SOURCE RESOLUTION: 34% — STRUCTURAL COMPLEXITY EXCEEDS MAPPING RECOMMENDATION: NONE
Still no recommendation. Leo had been operating without the System's guidance for eleven minutes. The overlay showed raw data — depth, pressure, reserves, resolution percentages — but nothing actionable. No suggested approach, no threat assessment, no protocol response. Just numbers.
He descended another five meters. The innermost ring's rotation became visible — a slow, deliberate turn, like a vault door moving on ancient hinges. The material was the same as the structure at 280 meters: dark, dense, not quite stone, not quite metal. Abyssal Steel. The same material as his knife.
The knife vibrated in its sheath. Leo pulled it free. The blade hummed at a frequency that matched the signal exactly, and the black surface reflected light that didn't exist at this depth.
"Can you hear me?" Leo spoke aloud. The words formed as bubbles — his throat wasn't built for speech underwater, but the gill-slits allowed enough airflow for vibration. Sound traveled through water four times faster than air. At 370 meters, his voice would carry.
The source didn't respond. The rings continued their rotation. The threads continued flowing inward.
Leo tried again. "I received your handshake. I'm the carrier. Protocol response active." He held the knife out, blade pointed toward the innermost ring. The Abyssal Steel hummed louder.
For thirty seconds, nothing changed. Then the innermost ring stopped.
The silence was worse than the signal. The vibration in Leo's chest vanished so abruptly that his vision blurred. His gill-slits spasmed. He coughed water, choked, and for one terrible moment thought the System had failed entirely.
ANOMALY: EXTERNAL SIGNAL CEASED CAUSE: SOURCE HAS SUSPENDED BROADCAST ENERGY RESERVES: 44% RECOMMENDATION: NONE
The ring was still. Every other ring continued spinning, but the center had stopped. And from the center, something emerged — a single thread of light, thick as Leo's arm, extending upward toward him.
Leo didn't move. The thread reached him and stopped, hovering a meter below his chest. It pulsed. Not at 7.83 hertz — at a lower frequency, almost subsonic. The gill-slits interpreted it as pressure changes, and Leo realized the thread was transmitting.
The System flickered.
ANOMALY: DIRECT DATA STREAM DETECTED BANDWIDTH: 4.7 KB/S PROTOCOL: MAINTENANCE NODE — JUNCTION SEVEN TRANSLATION: ACTIVE — RENDERING TO OVERLAY
Text appeared on his overlay, block by block, the way a terminal printed output in the old movies. Not System messages. Translated data. The source was speaking.
MAINTENANCE NODE JUNCTION 7: STATUS — DEGRADED. FUNCTION: THREAD FLOW REGULATION. CAPACITY: 12%. OPERATIONAL SINCE: UNKNOWN. LAST REPAIR: 2031-09-14.
Leo read it twice. A maintenance node. Not alive. Not dead. A machine — or something that performed the function of one. Built to regulate thread flow at a junction point deep beneath the basalt shelf. Twelve years ago, his father had repaired it. Now it was at twelve percent capacity, and climbing back to its operational position.
"I'm Leo Warden," he said. The bubbles carried his voice toward the thread of light. "Karl Warden was my father."
The data stream paused. Then:
MAINTENANCE NODE JUNCTION 7: SOMATIC SIGNATURE — WARDEN, K. RECOGNIZED. SECONDARY MATCH: WARDEN, L. PROTOCOL CARRIER. CONFIRMED.
It knew Karl's signature. It had stored Karl's data from the 2031 interaction and matched Leo's against it. Father and son, recognized by a machine at the bottom of the ocean.
NODE QUERY: PURPOSE OF VISIT.
Leo looked at the rings, the threads, the cathedral of carved basalt. "You called me here."
NODE RESPONSE: CALL WAS BROADCAST TO ALL ACTIVE PROTOCOL CARRIERS. YOU ARE THE ONLY CARRIER WITHIN RANGE.
The only one. Not a personal invitation. A general signal, and Leo happened to be the only receiver. He filed that under things Shell had warned him about.
"What do you need?" he asked.
NODE RESPONSE: REPAIR.
Scene 2: Function
The node transmitted its situation in compressed data packets, each one triggering a fresh overlay block. Leo descended to 360 meters — slightly shallower, slightly less pressure — and hovered beside the thread of light while the information poured in.
NODE STATUS: PREVIOUS REPAIR (2031-09-14) RESTORED FUNCTIONALITY FROM 3% TO 47%. SUBSEQUENT DEGRADATION DUE TO: (1) CONTINUED EXTERNAL THREAD DRAIN THROUGH ANCHORING PROTOCOL, (2) ENERGY DEPLETION FROM UNREGULATED FLOW, (3) STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO JUNCTION CHAMBER WALLS.
"Forty-seven percent down to twelve in twelve years," Leo said. "What's causing the drain?"
NODE RESPONSE: THE ANCHORING PROTOCOL AT 280M IS A SECONDARY STRUCTURE. NOT ORIGINAL INFRASTRUCTURE. IT REDIRECTS THREAD FLOW LATERALLY TO VERTICALLY, FEEDING ENERGY INTO THE FISSURE. THE NODE REGULATES FLOW AT THE JUNCTION. THE ANCHORING PROTOCOL BYPASSES THE REGULATION.
"So the anchoring protocol is stealing your energy."
NODE RESPONSE: ENERGY IS NOT THE CORRECT FRAMEWORK. THE NODE REGULATES THREAD PRESSURE. UNREGULATED FLOW CAUSES PRESSURE BUILDUP IN THE JUNCTION. PRESSURE BUILDUP CAUSES THREAD FRACTURES ABOVE THE JUNCTION.
Thread fractures. Cuts. The same cuts Leo had found trailing south-southwest from the structure.
"You're saying the severed threads aren't being cut. They're fracturing from pressure."
NODE RESPONSE: DISTINCTION IMPRECISE. ORIGINAL THREAD FRACTURES WERE CAUSED BY UNREGULATED FLOW. RECENT FRACTURES EXHIBIT PATTERN CONSISTENCY WITH DELIBERATE SEVERANCE. BOTH MECHANISMS ARE PRESENT.
Both. Natural fractures from the node's failure AND deliberate cuts from something — or someone — else. Leo pressed his fingers to his temples. The pressure was building there too, a dull ache behind his eyes.
"How much of the thread loss above is from your degradation versus deliberate cutting?"
NODE RESPONSE: ESTIMATED 60% FRACTURE-BASED. 40% SEVERANCE-BASED. SEVERANCE PATTERN IS NOT CONSISTENT WITH ANY MAINTENANCE PROTOCOL. SEVERANCE IS EXTERNAL.
External. Not the node. Not the anchoring protocol. Something else was cutting threads — someone with the knowledge to make clean, surgical cuts at depth.
NODE ENERGY DRAW: EACH DATA EXCHANGE CONSUMES 1.1% CARRIER RESERVES. CURRENT CARRIER RESERVES: 38%.
Leo checked the overlay. The number confirmed it. Each question cost him more than natural depth drain. He'd been exchanging data for roughly six minutes. The conversation itself was burning through his reserves.
"I need to be efficient," he said. "What do you need from me to repair?"
NODE RESPONSE: REPAIR REQUIRES FREQUENCY KEY. THE MAINTENANCE PROTOCOL OPERATES ON 7.83 HZ BASELINE. REPAIR REQUIRES A HARMONIC OVERRIDE AT 15.66 HZ — EXACT DOUBLE OF BASELINE. THE OVERRIDE RESETS FLOW REGULATION AND SEALS UNAUTHORIZED BYPASSES.
"Can you generate the harmonic yourself?"
NODE RESPONSE: NEGATIVE. THE NODE GENERATES BASELINE ONLY. THE HARMONIC MUST BE EXTERNALLY SOURCED. PROTOCOL CARRIERS CANNOT GENERATE 15.66 HZ WITHOUT A CATALYST.
"What catalyst?"
NODE RESPONSE: ABYSSAL STEEL. THE MATERIAL RESONATES AT DOUBLE BASELINE WHEN ACTIVATED BY PROTOCOL CARRIER. YOUR BLADE IS CATALYST-CAPABLE.
Leo looked at the knife in his hand. The black blade hummed at 7.83 hertz. It could resonate at double — 15.66 — if he activated it.
"How do I activate it?"
NODE RESPONSE: CARRIER MUST CHANNEL PROTOCOL ENERGY THROUGH THE BLADE. ESTIMATED COST: 22% OF CURRENT RESERVES.
Twenty-two percent. From thirty-eight. That would leave him at sixteen percent, at 370 meters, with a thirty-seven-atmosphere pressure differential between him and the surface.
"That might not be enough to get me back up."
NODE RESPONSE: SURFACE ASCENT REQUIRES MINIMUM 15% RESERVES FOR GILL FUNCTION AND STAGE 2 MAINTENANCE. AT 16%, ASCENT IS POSSIBLE WITH SLOW RATE AND NO ADDITIONAL ENERGY DRAWS.
Barely. Sixteen percent, ascending slowly, with no margin for emergency.
"Is there a faster way to repair? A smaller cost?"
NODE RESPONSE: NEGATIVE. HARMONIC OVERRIDE IS THE ONLY VALID REPAIR SEQUENCE. REDUCED COST WOULD RESULT IN INCOMPLETE REPAIR — NODE WOULD PARTIALLY RECOVER BUT UNAUTHORIZED BYPASS WOULD PERSIST. THE ANCHORING PROTOCOL AT 280M WOULD CONTINUE DRAINING THREAD FLOW.
Incomplete repair. The node would partially recover, but the structure would keep stealing energy. The fractures would slow but not stop. Tidecrest would still have eighteen months, maybe twenty-four instead of eighteen. A patch, not a fix.
Leo hovered in the dark water, the knife humming in his hand, the node's thread of light pulsing steadily beside him. The math was simple. The math was brutal.
"Before I decide," he said, "I need to know something. My father came here in 2031. He repaired you. What exactly did he do?"
The node paused. The data stream held for five seconds — an eternity of silence at depth.
NODE RESPONSE: QUERY REQUIRES COMPREHENSIVE TRANSMISSION. ESTIMATED COST: 3.4% RESERVES. WARNING: CARRIER RESERVES WILL FALL BELOW 35% DURING TRANSMISSION.
"Send it."
Scene 3: Karl
The data came in a single dense packet, and the System translated it line by line.
INTERACTION LOG: 2031-09-14. CARRIER: WARDEN, K. SOMATIC SIGNATURE: MATCHED. PROTOCOL STATUS: ACTIVE — STAGE 2. NODE STATUS AT TIME OF INTERACTION: 3% FUNCTIONALITY. REPAIR INITIATED BY CARRIER WARDEN.
CARRIER WARDEN CHANNELLED BASELINE FREQUENCY (7.83 HZ) THROUGH NODE INTERFACE FOR 47 MINUTES. DURING THIS PERIOD, NODE FUNCTIONALITY INCREASED FROM 3% TO 47%. FLOW REGULATION PARTIALLY RESTORED. THREAD PRESSURE ABOVE JUNCTION DECREASED BY 61%.
COMPLICATION: CARRIER WARDEN ATTEMPTED HARMONIC OVERRIDE (15.66 HZ) TO SEAL ANCHORING PROTOCOL BYPASS AT 280M. OVERRIDE REQUIRED CHANNELLING THROUGH ABYSSAL STEEL BLADE. CARRIER WARDEN LACKED ADEQUATE RESERVE ENERGY FOR FULL OVERRIDE.
"He tried to do the full repair," Leo said. "He didn't have enough energy."
NODE RESPONSE: CORRECT. CARRIER WARDEN RESERVES AT TIME OF OVERRIDE ATTEMPT: 19%. OVERRIDE REQUIRED 22%. CARRIER WARDEN PROCEEDED ANYWAY.
Leo's chest tightened. "What happened?"
NODE RESPONSE: OVERRIDE FAILED AT 83% COMPLETION. HARMONIC COLLAPSED. RESIDUAL ENERGY REVERSED THROUGH CARRIER WARDEN'S PROTOCOL INTERFACE. DAMAGE: 43% THREAD DENSITY LOSS. PERMANENT DEEP-WATER PROPRIOCEPTION FAILURE. PROTOCOL TRANSFORMATION: DESTROYED.
He knew most of this from the somatic trace at 280 meters. But the node wasn't finished.
ADDITIONAL EFFECT: REVERSED ENERGY CREATED A FREQUENCY IMPRINT ON THE ANCHORING PROTOCOL. THE IMPRINT MATCHES CARRIER WARDEN'S SOMATIC SIGNATURE. THE ANCHORING PROTOCOL NOW OPERATES UNDER CARRIER WARDEN'S AUTHORIZATION KEY.
Leo stared at the overlay. Read it again. The anchoring protocol — the structure at 280 meters that was draining threads and feeding them into the fissure — was operating under Karl's authorization. His failed repair hadn't just broken his own transformation. It had given the anchoring protocol a key it never had before. The structure wasn't just a deep-world artifact running on its own. It was running on Karl Warden's signature.
"That's why it's draining," Leo said. "The failed override didn't stop it. It gave the structure a carrier's authority to pull thread flow."
NODE RESPONSE: CORRECT. BEFORE 2031-09-14, THE ANCHORING PROTOCOL OPERATED AT 11% CAPACITY — INSUFFICIENT TO CAUSE SIGNIFICANT THREAD FRACTURE. AFTER THE FAILED OVERRIDE, OPERATING CAPACITY INCREASED TO 67%. CURRENT CAPACITY: 89%.
From eleven percent to eighty-nine percent. Karl's attempt to fix it had made it thirteen times more powerful.
"Can the authorization be revoked?"
NODE RESPONSE: NEGATIVE. THE AUTHENTICATION IS SOMATIC — PERMANENTLY LINKED TO CARRIER WARDEN'S SIGNATURE. REVOCATION WOULD REQUIRE CARRIER WARDEN'S PHYSICAL PRESENCE AND VOLUNTARY KEY EXTRACTION.
Karl was on the surface. Karl had lost his transformation. Karl couldn't come back down here, and even if he could, the extraction would need his cooperation.
"There's another way," Leo said. "The harmonic override. If I complete what he started — finish the last seventeen percent — does that seal the bypass?"
NODE RESPONSE: HARMONIC OVERRIDE AT 83% FAILED. COMPLETION OF THE OVERRIDE REQUIRES A CARRIER WITH SUFFICIENT RESERVES. CARRIER WARDEN FAILED BECAUSE HE LACKED ENERGY. IF OVERRIDE IS COMPLETED, THE ANCHORING PROTOCOL'S AUTHORIZATION WILL BE SEALED AND THE BYPASS CLOSED. THREAD FLOW WILL RETURN TO REGULATED PATTERN.
"And my father's authorization key?"
NODE RESPONSE: SEALED INSIDE THE ANCHORING PROTOCOL. THE AUTHORITY REMAINS, BUT THE CAPABILITY IS NEUTRALIZED. THE STRUCTURE WILL CEASE TO FUNCTION AS A THREAD DRAIN.
Leo let the information settle. The math hadn't changed. Twenty-two percent for the harmonic override. Sixteen percent remaining. A surfacing margin so thin that any complication would kill him.
"Tell me about the severing," he said. "The forty percent that's deliberate cuts, not fractures."
NODE RESPONSE: SEVERANCE PATTERN ANALYSIS COMPLETE. CUTS EXHIBIT CONSISTENCY WITH A MAINTENANCE-TYPE PROTOCOL — CLEAN, PRECISE, TARGETED AT HIGH-DENSITY THREAD JUNCTIONS. THE CUTS ARE NOT RANDOM. THEY FOLLOW THE TOPOLOGY OF THE THREAD NETWORK.
"Someone who understands the network."
NODE RESPONSE: CORRECT. THE SEVERANCE PATTERN MATCHES NO KNOWN MAINTENANCE PROTOCOL IN THE NODE'S DATABASE. HOWEVER, THE CUTTING TOOL'S FREQUENCY SIGNATURE IS PARTIALLY COMPATIBLE WITH THE NODE'S OWN HARMONIC PROFILE.
"Partially compatible. What does that mean?"
NODE RESPONSE: THE CUTTING TOOL WAS FABRICATED USING TECHNOLOGY FROM THE SAME INFRASTRUCTURE AS THE NODE. THE TOOL IS ABYSSAL STEEL.
Leo's hand tightened on the knife. Abyssal Steel. The same material as his blade. The same material as the node's rings. Someone had a tool made from deep-world technology, and they were using it to cut threads with surgical precision.
"Do you know who has it?"
NODE RESPONSE: NEGATIVE. THE NODE HAS NO SURFACE-REACHING SENSORS. SEVERANCE ACTIVITY IS DETECTED ONLY THROUGH THREAD PRESSURE ANOMALIES IN THE JUNCTION.
NODE QUERY: HAS THE CARRIER DECIDED TO PROCEED WITH HARMONIC OVERRIDE?
Leo checked the reserves. Thirty-three percent. The data exchange had cost more than the natural depth drain. He had enough for the override — barely — if everything went perfectly.
"Give me a minute," he said.
Scene 4: Decision
The chamber hummed around him. The rings spun. The threads flowed. Leo hovered in the dark at 370 meters and calculated whether he was going to die.
Thirty-three percent reserves. Twenty-two for the override. Eleven remaining. The gill-slits needed continuous energy to function — without them, he couldn't breathe underwater. Stage 2 maintenance required a minimum of fifteen percent for safe ascent. He would be four percent short.
Four percent. At this depth, four percent was the difference between controlled ascent and drowning.
"Node," he said. "If I complete the override and surface at eleven percent, what happens to the gill function during ascent?"
NODE RESPONSE: GILL FUNCTION REQUIRES CONTINUOUS 0.3% RESERVES PER 10 METERS OF ASCENT. AT 370M DEPTH, GILL FUNCTION COST DURING ASCENT: 11.1%. ADDITIONAL STAGE 2 MAINTENANCE COST: 2.8%. TOTAL ASCENT COST: 13.9%. CARRIER RESERVES AFTER OVERRIDE: 11%. DEFICIT: 2.9%.
Two point nine percent short. He would run out of energy approximately 350 meters from the surface. His gill-slits would shut down. He would be breathing water.
"Can the node supplement my reserves during ascent?"
NODE RESPONSE: NEGATIVE. THE NODE OPERATES ON THREAD FLOW ENERGY. THREAD FLOW ENERGY IS INCOMPATIBLE WITH CARRIER PROTOCOL RESERVES. THE NODE CANNOT TRANSFER ENERGY TO A CARRIER.
Of course it couldn't. Different systems. Different currencies. Leo was carrying a protocol designed for an individual body, and the node was a piece of infrastructure designed to regulate a network. They spoke the same language but couldn't share blood.
"What about the anchoring protocol? If I seal the bypass, the thread flow that's being drained — where does it go?"
NODE RESPONSE: THREAD FLOW WOULD REDISTRIBUTE LATERALLY. THE RECOVERED ENERGY WOULD RETURN TO THE THREAD NETWORK ABOVE THE JUNCTION. THIS REDISTRIBUTION WOULD CREATE A TRANSIENT ENERGY SURGE IN THE WEAVE-CURRENT.
"A surge. In the weave-current. At what depth?"
NODE RESPONSE: THE WEAVE-CURRENT EXISTS AT APPROXIMATELY 160M DEPTH.
160 meters. Leo would be ascending through 160 meters. If the sealed bypass released a surge of thread energy into the weave-current at that exact depth, and if that surge was compatible with his protocol reserves —
"Would the transient surge be detectable by a protocol carrier passing through the weave-current at the time of release?"
NODE RESPONSE: DETECTION IS CERTAIN. ABSORPTION IS PROBABLE. CARRIER PROTOCOL IS DESIGNED TO INTERFACE WITH THREAD FLOW ENERGY AT WEAVE-CURRENT DENSITY. ABSORPTION ESTIMATE: 4.7% TO 8.2% RESERVES, DEPENDING ON PROXIMITY AND TIMING.
Leo's pulse quickened. Four to eight percent. If he got five, he'd have sixteen on the other side — enough. If he got eight, he'd have nineteen — comfortable.
"The timing would have to be precise."
NODE RESPONSE: THE TRANSIENT SURGE LASTS APPROXIMATELY 90 SECONDS AFTER BYPASS SEAL. CARRIER WOULD NEED TO BE WITHIN 20 METERS OF THE WEAVE-CURRENT DURING THAT WINDOW.
He'd have to time his ascent to pass through 160 meters exactly when the surge peaked. Start the override, ascend immediately, hit 160 meters within ninety seconds. At a natural ascent rate of roughly five meters per second — too fast for normal diving, but his Stage 2 body could handle the pressure change — he could reach 160 meters in about forty seconds from 200 meters. The timing was tight but possible.
"If the absorption doesn't happen — if I miss the surge or the absorption is lower than estimated?"
NODE RESPONSE: CARRIER WOULD SURFACE WITH INSUFFICIENT RESERVES FOR GILL FUNCTION. GILL-SLITS WOULD SEAL. CARRIER WOULD BE UNABLE TO BREATHE UNDERWATER. IF SURFACED BEFORE GILL FAILURE: CARRIER TRANSITIONS TO ATMOSPHERIC BREATHING. IF SUBMERGED AFTER GILL FAILURE: DROWNING.
The System stated it with the same flat precision it used for depth readings. If Leo missed the window, he'd drown in the last few meters of his ascent, thirty meters from the air he'd spent his whole life breathing.
"How long have I been at depth?" Leo asked.
ELAPSED TIME AT 370M: 22 MINUTES ELAPSED TIME SINCE WATER ENTRY: 38 MINUTES ENERGY RESERVES: 31%
Thirty-one percent. He'd lost another two percent just from the exchange. Every second at 370 meters cost him reserves he couldn't spare.
"Node. One more question. My father — when he completed his repair in 2031, before the override failed. Did he know the override would cost him his transformation?"
NODE RESPONSE: CARRIER WARDEN WAS INFORMED OF THE COST. OVERRIDE REQUIRED MINIMUM 22% RESERVES. CARRIER WARDEN HAD 19%. CARRIER WARDEN PROCEEDED.
"He knew."
NODE RESPONSE: CARRIER WARDEN STATED: "MY SON DOESN'T NEED A TRANSFORMATION. HE NEEDS THE THREADS TO HOLD."
Leo closed his eyes. The pressure hummed in his skull. The gill-slits pulsed. His father had known the override would destroy his transformation — had known he'd lose his ability to function in the deep, his enhanced body, everything the protocol had given him — and he'd done it anyway. For a twelve-year-old boy on the surface who didn't even know the ocean was alive.
The override had failed at eighty-three percent. Karl had paid everything and gotten nothing. The structure had absorbed his authorization key and become thirteen times more powerful. The worst possible outcome, purchased with the best possible intention.
Leo opened his eyes.
"I'm going to complete the override," he said.
NODE RESPONSE: CONFIRMED. CARRIER MUST POSITION WITHIN 3 METERS OF THE INNERMOST RING. CHANNEL PROTOCOL ENERGY THROUGH ABYSSAL STEEL BLADE. SUSTAIN HARMONIC AT 15.66 HZ UNTIL OVERRIDE REACHES 100%. ESTIMATED DURATION: 3 TO 5 MINUTES.
"Start the count. I'll begin when I'm in position."
Leo descended. The innermost ring loomed, dark and still, its rotation halted. He placed himself three meters from its edge, knife extended, blade pointed at the center. The node's thread of light retracted into the ring.
CARRIER RESERVES: 31% OVERRIDE COST: 22% PROJECTED RESERVE AFTER OVERRIDE: 9% ASCENT COST: 13.9% WEAVE-CURRENT SURGE ABSORPTION: 4.7%–8.2% PROJECTED RESERVE AT SURFACE: 0%–3.3%
The numbers stared at him. Best case, he surfaced with three percent. Worst case, he didn't surface at all.
OVERRIDE WINDOW OPEN. PROCEED WHEN READY.
Leo gripped the Abyssal Steel knife. The blade hummed at 7.83 hertz. He channeled the protocol energy through his arm, through his fingers, into the steel.
The blade screamed.
Not at 7.83. At 15.66. A frequency so far below human hearing that it was felt only as vibration — a deep, bone-shaking oscillation that turned the water around the blade into a column of pressure waves. The innermost ring caught the harmonic and rang like a bell, the dark material vibrating in sympathy, and the channels carved into the chamber walls lit up in sequence, a cascade of cold light flowing outward from the ring.
Leo held the frequency. The reserves dropped — 31, 30, 29 — each percent a small death. The ring vibrated harder. The channels glowed brighter. The thread-flow patterns above began to shift, the luminous rivers redirecting from the anchoring protocol's drain back into the regulated network.
The ring was moving. Rotating again, slowly, but now in reverse — undoing the twelve years of degradation, the bypass slowly sealing. Leo's arm burned. The knife was almost too hot to hold. His reserves were a countdown.
The override was working. The ring's rotation accelerated. The channels pulsed. Above, somewhere at 280 meters, the anchoring protocol was losing its grip — the authorization key sealed, the bypass closed, the thread flow releasing.
"Come on," Leo said through gritted teeth, the words forming as bubbles that rose toward the fissure.
The ring locked into position. The harmonic reached resonance. For one moment, the entire chamber rang at 15.66 hertz — every wall, every channel, every thread of light vibrating in unison. Then the sound stopped.
OVERRIDE: 100% COMPLETE BYPASS: SEALED ANCHORING PROTOCOL: NEUTRALIZED THREAD FLOW: REDISTRIBUTING LATERALLY CARRIER RESERVES: 9%
Nine percent. Leo killed the channel. The knife went dead in his hand. The chamber was quiet — truly quiet, for the first time since he'd entered. The node's hum was gone. The signal was gone. The rings were still.
He turned and kicked upward. Hard.
The ascent was a controlled fall in reverse. Leo kicked with everything Stage 2 gave him, his body driving through the narrowing fissure, the basalt walls blurring past. The weave-perception was active but he ignored it — there was nothing to see but the route up and the reserves ticking down.
DEPTH: 340m RESERVES: 8.4%
The walls widened. He was past the fissure, past the structure at 280 meters. The structure was dark now — no glow, no pulse, no thread flow. The bypass was sealed.
DEPTH: 280m RESERVES: 7.1%
He kicked harder. The pressure was decreasing. His body was lightening. The gill-slits were still drawing oxygen, still pulsing at a frequency that was fading — the node's signal was gone, replaced by his own heartbeat.
DEPTH: 220m RESERVES: 5.9%
The weave-current was close. He could see it — the luminous strand at 160 meters, running horizontal through the dark water. The surge should be coming any moment.
DEPTH: 180m RESERVES: 4.8%
He saw it. A ripple in the weave-current — not the steady flow but a pulse, a surge of energy radiating outward from below. The bypass seal. Thread energy flooding back into the network, exactly as the node had predicted.
DEPTH: 165m WEAVE-CURRENT SURGE DETECTED ABSORPTION WINDOW: 90 SECONDS
Leo dropped into the current.
The energy hit him like a wave. Not heat, not light — something older, something his body recognized before his mind did. The gill-slits flared open. The protocol surged. His reserves jumped.
RESERVES: 4.8%... 6.2%... 7.9%... 9.1%...
He was absorbing the surge. The weave-current poured energy into his protocol interface, the way a battery charges from a compatible source. His reserves climbed. Nine percent. Ten. Eleven.
RESURGE COMPLETE ABSORBED: 6.7% TOTAL RESERVES: 11.5%
Eleven and a half percent. Enough. More than enough.
Leo kicked upward, out of the current, toward the surface. The water lightened around him — dark blue, then medium, then the green-gray of shallow coastal water. The reef appeared below. The dock shadows appeared above.
He broke the surface at 9:47 PM, nineteen minutes after sunset. The air hit his face — cold, salt-laden, impossibly dry. His gill-slits sealed shut. The System overlay faded. He was breathing air, floating in black water, the dock lights a distant blur above him.
DEPTH: 0m ENERGY RESERVES: 10.3% STATUS: SURFACED NOTE: ANCHORING PROTOCOL SEAL IS PERMANENT. NODE FUNCTIONALITY RESTORED TO 41%. RECOMMENDATION: NONE
Still no recommendation. Leo floated on his back, staring at the dark sky, and let the ocean hold him.
The bypass was sealed. The structure was dead. The node was recovering. And somewhere in the data the node had transmitted — buried in the interaction log, in the line about Karl Warden's authorization key, in the fact that the anchoring protocol had operated under his father's signature for twelve years — Leo had the answer to something he hadn't thought to ask.
The source hadn't severed the threads. The structure hadn't severed the threads. The node had confirmed forty percent deliberate severance, with a tool made of Abyssal Steel, following a pattern that matched deep-world topology.
Someone with an Abyssal Steel blade and knowledge of the thread network had been cutting. Deliberately. Methodically. For three years.
Leo turned toward the dock. His arms were heavy. His body was failing. But the question burned clearer than the fatigue: who else had an Abyssal Steel blade?
The only person who'd had one, before Leo, was Karl Warden.
